86Box

Emulator of x86-based machines based on PCem

Visit

It emulates a wide range of x86‑based IBM PC compatibles, from the original 1981 IBM PC 5150 through later models that use the PCI bus. The low‑level core reproduces processors from the 8086 up to Pentium class with an emphasis on accuracy, and it supports many legacy peripherals such as video, sound, network, hard‑disk, and SCSI adapters, as well as MIDI output to Windows, FluidSynth, or emulated Roland synthesizers.

The software can run operating systems and applications that were designed for MS‑DOS, early Windows, OS/2, various Linux distributions, and even vintage platforms like BeOS or NeXTSTEP. Users configure virtual machines through an interface modeled on mainstream hypervisors, with extensive options for hardware selection and a built‑in preview manager introduced in version 5.0.

It is packaged for Windows, Linux, and macOS (10.13 or newer) and requires at least a Core 2/ Athlon 64 class CPU and 4 GB of RAM. Stable releases are provided via GitHub, while experimental builds offer the latest development changes.
