Actual

Local-first personal finance tool based on zero-sum budgeting, supporting synchronization across devices, custom rules, manual transaction importing (from QIF, OFX, and QFX files), and optional automatic synchronization with many banks.

Actual is a local‑first personal finance application built on the envelope (zero‑sum) budgeting method. It stores all data on the user’s device, offering optional end‑to‑end encryption and the ability to sync changes across multiple devices through a self‑hosted or managed sync service. Users can import transactions manually from QIF, OFX, and QFX files, define custom budgeting rules, and, if desired, connect to many banks for automatic synchronization.

The software is written in NodeJS and distributed as open‑source under the MIT license, with no subscription fees or tiered pricing. It can be run locally on Windows, macOS, or Linux, deployed via Docker, or accessed through one‑click cloud options such as PikaPods or Fly.io. The interface emphasizes speed and simplicity, providing fast transaction entry, split‑transaction handling, transfers, and undo/redo functionality.

In addition to core budgeting features, Actual includes built‑in reports for net worth and cash flow, a custom report engine, dark mode, and an API for extensibility. Documentation covers budgeting concepts, account management, migration from other tools, and contribution guidelines, making it suitable for individuals who want full control over their financial data while still benefiting from multi‑device sync.
