Audiobookshelf

Audiobook and podcast server. It streams all audio formats, keeps and syncs progress across devices. Comes with open-source apps for Android and iOS.

Audiobookshelf is a self‑hosted server that lets users stream audiobooks and podcasts directly from their own hardware. It supports all common audio formats, automatically detects new files, and provides on‑the‑fly transcoding so playback works without manual conversion. Users can create multiple accounts with custom permissions, and the system tracks listening progress per user, synchronising it across any device that accesses the server.

The project includes open‑source mobile clients for Android and iOS, both in beta, as well as a web interface that functions as a progressive web app and offers Chromecast support. Features such as bulk drag‑and‑drop uploads, automatic metadata and cover‑art retrieval, chapter editing via the Audnexus API, and the ability to merge files into a single M4B file help organize large libraries. It also supports basic ebook formats and can send them to e‑readers.

Audiobookshelf is distributed under GPL‑3.0, requires no subscription, and provides tools for automated daily backups and API access for custom integrations. Installation documentation covers reverse‑proxy configuration for NGINX and Apache, ensuring compatibility with standard web‑server setups.
