Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing
Downloads scientific computing jobs and runs them invisibly in the background
The client runs on a user’s computer, silently fetching computational tasks from a range of scientific projects and executing them in the background. It operates without requiring active user interaction, allowing the machine to contribute processing power while remaining usable for other activities. The software is distributed for macOS and is considered stable.
Researchers and volunteers use the platform to support studies in fields such as biomedicine, physics, astronomy, and climate science. By installing the client, participants can select which projects to support, including those managed by Science United and other BOINC‑affiliated initiatives. The system aggregates idle CPU cycles from many personal computers to accelerate large‑scale simulations and data analyses.
What distinguishes this tool is its integration with a network of over thirty active science projects, all coordinated through the University of California, Berkeley, and funded by the National Science Foundation. The client receives regular updates, such as version 8.2.11, and offers add‑ons like the Fresco graphical interface for enhanced project management.
