Docassemble is a self‑hosted, open‑source expert system that runs guided interviews through a web interface. It collects user input, processes it with Python logic defined in YAML files, and can generate output documents in PDF, RTF, or DOCX formats for download or email. The platform also supports non‑document actions such as API calls, resource redirection, and data storage.

The system includes a WYSIWYG editor for creating templates, integrates with cloud storage services, and can capture touchscreen signatures. It offers live chat, screen sharing, and remote control to assist users in real time, as well as optional AI‑driven language processing, SMS and email communication, OCR of uploaded images, and multilingual support. Multi‑user workflows enable collaborative or mediated interviews.

Extensibility is provided through Python code, background tasks, and a REST API, allowing developers to build custom logic and integrate with external services. Security features include server‑side encryption, two‑factor authentication, and document redaction, while the responsive Bootstrap‑based design works across devices. The project is released under the MIT license and is considered stable.
