FreeTex
Free intelligent formula recognition software
FreeTex is a locally‑run formula recognition tool that converts images of mathematical expressions into editable LaTeX or Word formats. It operates without an internet connection, keeping all processing on the user’s machine and preserving data privacy. The software can automatically employ a dedicated GPU for inference when available, and it supports a range of image types including handwritten, printed, and scanned formulas.
The user interface is designed for simplicity, offering three input methods—file upload, screen capture, and clipboard paste—each accessible via configurable keyboard shortcuts. After recognition, the result can be copied directly to the clipboard in the desired format, eliminating the need for additional conversion steps.
FreeTex includes both a built‑in local recognizer and an optional multimodal model, allowing users to choose the engine that best fits their hardware. It is distributed as a ready‑to‑run application for macOS (ARM64) and Windows (x64), and the source code can be executed in a Conda environment for custom deployments.
