fx_cast Bridge
Bridge helper for fx_cast Firefox extension to enable Chromecast support
The companion bridge application enables the fx_cast Firefox extension to communicate with Chromecast receivers, providing casting functionality for web‑based media such as YouTube, Netflix, BBC iPlayer and other HTML5 sources. Because WebExtension APIs cannot perform the required mDNS discovery or TCP/UDP communication, the bridge runs as a native process that handles device discovery via system services (Bonjour on macOS and Windows, Avahi on Linux) and relays casting commands from the browser.
Users of Firefox who want to cast content to Chromecast devices install the bridge alongside the extension. The bridge is distributed for macOS (available through Homebrew) and for Linux (via Arch‑AUR packages), while the extension itself supports Windows, macOS and Linux. The bridge must be installed separately from the browser add‑on and operates in the background, allowing the extension’s cast button to appear for whitelisted sites or through context‑menu options for supported media.
The solution is focused on providing a stable, native bridge for Chromecast support in Firefox, handling the networking and discovery tasks that the browser cannot perform directly, and it is maintained as a stable component for macOS users.
