GeneWeb

Genealogy software that can be used offline or as a Web service.

GeneWeb is an open‑source genealogy engine written in OCaml that can run as a local application or as a web service. It stores family data in its native gw format and supports full GEDCOM import and export, allowing interoperability with other genealogy tools. The built‑in lightweight web server generates HTML pages on demand, so any modern browser can view and edit records without additional software.

The software is designed for users who need to manage large genealogical collections, from hobbyists maintaining personal trees to organizations handling millions of individuals. It offers granular access controls, password‑protected accounts, and configurable privacy rules to hide living persons. Features include event handling with dates, witnesses, notes and sources, statistical reports, anniversary displays, and a relationship/consanguinity calculator.

GeneWeb runs on Unix, Linux, Windows and macOS and is available in many languages. It can be installed as a daemon or via CGI, and a web‑based configuration tool (gwsetup) simplifies maintenance. The project is released under GPL‑2.0, is self‑hostable, free of subscription, and has been used in large public databases such as Roglo and Geneanet.
