HDFView
Tool for browsing and editing HDF files
HDFView is a Java‑based graphical utility that lets users explore and modify HDF4 and HDF5 files. It presents the file hierarchy as a tree, allowing creation of new files, addition or removal of groups and datasets, and direct editing of dataset contents. Attributes can also be added, deleted, or changed through the interface.
The tool relies on the Java HDF Object Package, which provides an object‑oriented representation of HDF4 and HDF5 data structures. Documentation and user guides are supplied, and pre‑built binary distributions are available for macOS, including installer and application‑image formats.
Targeted at researchers, engineers, and developers who need to inspect or edit scientific data stored in HDF formats, HDFView supports routine data management tasks without requiring command‑line interaction. Its stable release is maintained by the HDF Group, a non‑profit organization dedicated to the long‑term accessibility of HDF data.
