icestudio
Visual editor for open FPGA board
Icestudio provides a graphical environment for creating designs that target open‑source FPGA boards. Users assemble logic blocks by dragging and dropping them onto a canvas and connect them with lines; the tool also allows direct entry of Verilog code for those who prefer text‑based design. Once a schematic is complete, a single command synthesises the design and programs the selected FPGA, handling the underlying toolchain automatically.
The application runs on macOS, Linux and Windows and is built on the Icestorm project and the Apio build system. It includes built‑in support for a range of open hardware such as Alhambra II, Icezum Alhambra, Upduino, TinyFPGA and Nandland Go board, with a full board list available on the project page. Community members can obtain stable releases or nightly builds from the project’s repositories.
Icestudio targets hobbyists, educators and developers who work with open‑source FPGA platforms and want a visual workflow that simplifies hardware description while still permitting low‑level Verilog editing. The tool’s drag‑and‑drop interface, one‑click synthesis, and cross‑platform availability distinguish it within the open‑hardware ecosystem.
