Imp Reader
Turn PDFs into audiobooks. AI voices + built-in OCR offline.
Imp Reader is a macOS PDF viewer that converts documents into spoken audio using AI‑generated voices. When a PDF is opened, the app extracts the text—including from scanned pages via built‑in OCR—and streams it aloud with natural‑sounding speech, automatically detecting English and Chinese and applying appropriate pronunciation. The reading flow is segmented into logical speech units, and pages turn automatically so the user can listen hands‑free while commuting, exercising, or resting their eyes.
The tool targets students, professionals, language learners, and anyone who prefers auditory consumption of written material, as well as users who need screen‑reading assistance. Its interface is minimal, offering a single play button to start playback without complex settings. All processing occurs locally on the Mac, ensuring that documents never leave the device and that the service works entirely offline on macOS 11.0 or later.
