macintosh.js
Virtual Apple Macintosh with System 8, running in Electron
macintosh.js runs a full System 8 environment inside an Electron container, emulating a 1991 Macintosh Quadra 900 with a Motorola CPU. The application bundles the classic operating system and a selection of period‑appropriate software, allowing users to launch games such as Oregon Trail, Duke Nukem 3D, and Civilization II, as well as legacy Adobe and other productivity tools.
The emulator is packaged for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with installers and standalone archives for both 32‑bit and 64‑bit architectures, including ARM variants. It relies entirely on JavaScript, so performance reflects that design choice, but it provides functional compatibility with the original System 8 applications and includes a virtual Ethernet card for limited network connectivity.
File exchange with the host system is supported through a built‑in transfer dialog and the ability to mount disk images. The networking layer uses a UDP‑based bridge that enables AppleTalk communication between multiple instances on the same LAN, allowing simple file sharing and inter‑machine interaction.
