MakeMKV
Video format converter (transcoder)
MakeMKV extracts the video, audio, and subtitle streams from DVD and Blu‑ray discs and writes them into Matroska (MKV) containers without altering the original data. It supports discs protected by current AACS and BD+ schemes, preserving all tracks, chapters, language labels, and metadata while keeping the conversion speed limited only by the drive’s read rate. The resulting MKV files can be played directly on a wide range of media players across operating systems, and they can serve as source material for further transcoding or authoring.
The tool is aimed at users who own physical media and want a convenient way to archive or stream its contents in a freely usable format. Because it performs a direct copy of the original streams, it is suitable for preserving high‑definition video and lossless audio tracks. It also offers instant streaming of decrypted discs to compatible players, eliminating the need for intermediate files.
MakeMKV is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. DVD‑only functionality remains free permanently, and all Blu‑ray features are provided at no charge during the current beta phase. The software is stable and designed for one‑click operation, requiring no additional components for decryption or conversion.
