NearDrop
An unofficial Google Nearby Share/Quick Share app for macOS.
NearDrop implements a subset of Google’s Nearby Share/Quick Share protocol for macOS, allowing files and links to be transferred from Android devices to a Mac over a shared Wi‑Fi LAN. The application resides in the menu bar and saves received items to the user’s Downloads folder, offering a simple right‑click‑Share workflow in Finder or Safari.
The tool is limited to local network communication; it does not support Wi‑Fi Direct, Bluetooth, or internet‑based relay methods used by Google’s official implementation. Visibility is unrestricted while the app runs, and Android devices must be made visible via a QR code or intent shortcut because macOS cannot emit the required BLE broadcasts. Compatibility requires both devices to be on the same Wi‑Fi network, and some public networks may block the necessary local traffic.
Installation is provided via a downloadable bundle or Homebrew, with instructions for bypassing macOS Gatekeeper and adding NearDrop as a login item. The project is open‑source, free to use, and considered stable, inviting contributions that respect the repository’s contribution guidelines.
