Pine
Native markdown editor
Pine is a lightweight macOS application for creating and editing markdown documents. It follows Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines and uses the document‑based app model, providing a native experience for macOS users who work with markdown files. The editor supports a range of markdown extensions, including GitHub‑flavored syntax, LaTeX math, emojis, and HTML, and offers autocomplete for LaTeX, markdown, and HTML constructs.
The interface includes a toggleable split view—both horizontal and vertical—full‑screen mode, and tabbed editing, allowing users to view source and rendered preview side by side. Themes are customizable, with support for custom CSS files, and the editor can display syntax‑highlighted code, count words, and auto‑pair markdown tags. It also integrates basic version control features such as autosaving, history recovery, and folder‑based organization of notes.
Additional capabilities include local image handling, keyboard and Touch Bar shortcuts for common markdown actions, and the ability to share markdown files directly. The project is actively developed, with a Homebrew installation option and source code available for building and testing on macOS.
