Playback

Playback is an experimental video player built on Electron, combining Chromium and Node.js to provide a desktop‑based media experience. It can play local MP4 and WebM files, stream YouTube videos, and cast content to compatible devices via Chromecast. The player also integrates WebTorrent, allowing live streaming of video shared through BitTorrent magnet links.

The application is currently released for macOS, with Windows and Linux builds not yet available. Users can extend its functionality through a companion Chrome extension that adds a “Play in Playback” option for YouTube pages. The project’s source code is hosted on GitHub under an open‑source license, and it is marked as free‑tier and stable.

Playback invites contributions from developers familiar with HTML, CSS, or JavaScript, tagging suitable issues as “help wanted” and providing a contributing guide for newcomers. This openness encourages community involvement in adding features and fixing bugs.
