SapMachine OpenJDK Development Kit

SapMachine is SAP’s maintained distribution of the OpenJDK, intended for use as a free, cross‑platform, production‑ready Java runtime. It is Java SE certified and serves as the default Java Runtime for many SAP applications and services, supporting all major operating systems. The distribution offers both long‑term support (LTS) releases, which include bug fixes and performance updates, and short‑term and pre‑release versions for developers who need newer features.

The project aims to stay as close to the upstream OpenJDK source as possible, adding extra functionality only when required. SAP’s contributions to the OpenJDK ecosystem are reflected in SapMachine, including PowerPC/AIX support, elastic Metaspace handling, enhanced NullPointerException messages, and a dedicated website for Java Flight Recorder (JFR) events. A build of JDK Mission Control (JMC) is also provided alongside the JDK binaries.

SapMachine is targeted at developers and enterprises that need a reliable, SAP‑backed Java development kit with long‑term maintenance, while remaining compatible with standard OpenJDK tooling and libraries.
