Tuwunel is a Rust‑based homeserver that implements the Matrix specification, offering a drop‑in alternative to Synapse for any Matrix client, bridge, or bot. It aims to provide scalable, low‑cost operation suitable for enterprise and community deployments, and it fully supports all core Matrix features except a few niche cases. The server is self‑hostable, open‑source under the Apache‑2.0 license, and can be run from static binaries, Docker images, or native packages across many Linux distributions.

The project is the official successor to conduwuit, inheriting its stability and adding further performance improvements. It is already used by several companies and is sponsored by the Swiss government for citizen services, indicating active maintenance by full‑time staff. Documentation covers configuration, TLS setup, and migration from earlier Matrix homeservers.

Installation options include Docker Hub, GitHub Container Registry, Debian/RedHat packages, Arch AUR, NixOS modules, and Alpine packages, with a simple TOML‑based configuration file and optional reverse‑proxy integration for TLS handling.
