VMPK

Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard

Visit

VMPK generates and receives MIDI events but allowing a computer keyboard or mouse to act as a piano controller. It does not produce audio itself; instead it forwards MIDI notes, program changes, and controller messages to external synthesizers or software instruments, and can also display incoming MIDI data from other sources. The program supports configurable alphanumeric keyboard maps, stored in XML, with ready‑made layouts for several European languages.

The application runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, using the Qt5 GUI framework and Drumstick RT for cross‑platform MIDI I/O. Users can load instrument definitions in the .INS format, the same files employed by other MIDI tools, to match specific hardware or software synths. VMPK can be employed both as a live input device and as a visual monitor for MIDI streams.

Targeted at musicians, composers, and developers who need a lightweight, configurable MIDI controller without built‑in sound generation, VMPK provides a stable, open‑source solution for testing, practice, and integration with existing MIDI setups.
