WD Security
Lock and unlock Western Digital external drives with hardware encryption
WD Security provides password‑based protection for Western Digital external drives that include built‑in 256‑bit AES hardware encryption. Users can set, change, or remove a password that locks the drive, preventing unauthorized access to its contents. The software also supports an auto‑unlock feature that can be toggled on or off, and it offers a separate “WD Unlocker” utility for unlocking drives without the full application.
The tool runs on Windows 11 and macOS 14‑15 (Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe) and is intended for drives such as My Book, My Passport, My Book Duo, WD Drive Plus, and related models that are explicitly listed as supported. It does not work with drives from other vendors or with WD drives that lack the required hardware encryption. ARM processors are not supported.
Installation involves extracting a ZIP archive and running the provided installer; the software then prompts the user to create a password and optionally enable auto‑unlock. If the password is forgotten, all data on the drive is lost and the drive must be erased before reuse. Technical support cannot recover lost passwords.
