yabai

Keyboard-driven tiling window manager.

Source

yabai extends macOS’s built‑in window manager with a command‑line driven tiling system. It arranges windows using a binary space‑partitioning algorithm, allowing users to focus on content without manual resizing. The utility also supports focus‑follows‑mouse, disabling space‑switch animations, and creating more than the default sixteen spaces.

Configuration is performed through plain‑text files, and keyboard shortcuts can be bound with third‑party tools such as skhd. Sample configurations and detailed documentation are provided via the project’s wiki and example directory, guiding installation, setup, and uninstallation across Intel and Apple‑Silicon Macs.

The software requires macOS 11 or newer, accessibility and optional screen‑recording permissions, and the “Displays have separate Spaces” setting enabled. Certain advanced features may need System Integrity Protection to be partially disabled and the binary to be code‑signed to retain required privileges.
