Alpha
Text editor based on Apple's Cocoa framework
Alpha is a macOS‑only text editor built on the Cocoa framework, continuing a lineage that dates back to the early 1980s. The current rewrite, AlphaCocoa, runs on macOS 10.11 and later and is distributed as a signed application bundle that can be installed by dragging it into the Applications folder. Source code and binary releases are hosted on SourceForge, with the latest stable version 9.2.3 (named “Suhail”) available for download.
The editor is designed for multi‑modal, programmable editing, offering strong support for TeX/LaTeX, HTML, and a wide range of programming language source files. Its extensibility stems from most editing commands being implemented in Tcl, allowing users to script custom behavior and integrate additional functionality without modifying the core application.
Alpha is positioned for developers and authors who need a native macOS editing environment with built‑in scripting capabilities and reliable handling of structured documents. The project provides documentation, mailing lists, and a wiki for both end users and contributors, and it maintains an active Subversion repository for source access and compilation instructions.
