Arq provides file backup for macOS and Windows, storing data in a cloud account the user already controls or on local destinations such as external drives, NAS devices, or SFTP servers. It encrypts all data end‑to‑end, ensuring only the owner can read the backups, and it avoids vendor lock‑in by supporting a wide range of cloud providers, including AWS, Google Cloud, and Dropbox.

The software creates point‑in‑time snapshots using filesystem snapshot technology, allowing multiple versions of each file to be retained. This versioning enables recovery from accidental deletion, corruption, or ransomware by restoring earlier copies without needing to download archive files. Incremental backups operate at the block level with compression and de‑duplication, handling files of any size or type, including those on external drives and network shares.

Arq offers configurable schedules, such as hourly or daily backups, and can limit operations based on Wi‑Fi networks or other criteria. A premium tier extends the same functionality to up to five computers and includes integrated cloud storage, while the core application remains a stable, feature‑rich solution for personal and small‑business data protection.
