BlackHole
Freemium, open-source virtual output/input audio driver for recording/routing internal audio.
BlackHole is a macOS virtual audio loopback driver that lets applications send audio directly to other applications without adding latency. It works as both an output and input device, creating a hidden audio path that can be used for recording, streaming, or routing internal sound. The driver supports a wide range of channel counts—from 2 up to 256—and a broad set of sample rates, from 8 kHz to 768 kHz, while remaining compatible with macOS 10.10 and newer on both Intel and Apple Silicon hardware. No kernel extensions or system‑security modifications are required.
Typical users include musicians, podcasters, streamers, and anyone who needs to capture or redirect audio between software such as Logic Pro X, GarageBand, Audacity, or video‑conference tools. The driver can be installed via a downloadable package or Homebrew, and uninstallation is provided through dedicated scripts or manual removal of the driver bundle.
What distinguishes BlackHole is its zero‑additional‑latency design, customizable channel and latency settings, and the ability to create hidden mirror devices for flexible routing. The project is open‑source, offers a free tier, and is maintained as a stable release with community support through Discord and a public wiki.
