Denemo

Music notation program

Visit

Denemo is a free, open‑source music notation editor that runs on GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows. It provides a rapid entry interface where users can type notes on the keyboard, play them via a MIDI controller, or input them acoustically from a microphone. While the user works, Denemo continuously typesets the music in the background using LilyPond, producing high‑quality printable scores.

The program emphasizes a musical workflow: the numeric keypad can be used as a rhythm instrument, and audible feedback helps correct pitch and duration errors. A “pitches‑first” mode lets users input notes before rhythms, and links can be embedded in the score to open the original source document at the corresponding bar, facilitating transcription and review.

Denemo supports a wide range of notation elements—including tablature, chord charts, drum parts, transposition, and complex LilyPond syntax—making it suitable for simple exercises as well as large, professional scores such as operas.
