Frescobaldi provides a text‑based environment for creating and editing LilyPond sheet‑music files. It combines a code‑oriented editor with syntax highlighting, automatic completion, and a built‑in documentation browser, allowing users to write LilyPond source and view the resulting scores without leaving the program. The interface includes a music view with point‑and‑click navigation, a MIDI player for previewing generated audio, and tools for importing MusicXML, MIDI, and ABC files.

The application targets composers, arrangers, and music educators who work with LilyPond and need a lightweight yet capable editor. Features such as a Score Wizard, Snippet Manager, and Quick Insert panel streamline common tasks like setting up a new score, inserting dynamics, articulations, or spanners, and managing reusable text fragments. Additional functions enable transposition, conversion between relative and absolute notation, rhythm editing, and lyric hyphenation using standard dictionaries.

Frescobaldi runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, supports multiple LilyPond versions by automatically selecting the appropriate one, and offers configurable colors, fonts, and keyboard shortcuts. It is released under the GPL and includes translations for a broad range of languages.
