The tool converts email stored in proprietary formats from a wide range of legacy and current mail applications into open, portable formats such as mbox, Maildir, EML, CSV and IMAP‑compatible maildir structures. It supports import from many historic clients—including AOL for Mac and Windows, Apple Mail, Entourage, Outlook (PST, OST, MSG), Thunderbird, Google Takeout, and numerous UNIX‑style mailboxes—and can write to modern formats suitable for archiving, database entry, or forensic analysis.

It is intended for users who need to migrate email between different clients or operating systems, prepare collections for e‑Discovery, forensic examination, or long‑term preservation. The software includes utilities for splitting, sorting, merging archives, harvesting addresses, and an embedded IMAP server that simplifies importing into any IMAP‑compatible mail client.
