Gearboy

Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulator

Gearboy is a cross‑platform emulator that reproduces the behavior of the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy hardware. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and can be used as a Libretro core, providing a command‑line and graphical interface written in C++. The emulator supports a wide range of cartridge types, including ROM‑only, ROM + RAM, and many memory‑bank controllers such as MBC1 through MBC5, MBC7, HuC‑1, HuC‑3, MMM01, Pocket Camera, TAMA5 and MBC1M, allowing most commercial titles to be loaded.

The project targets developers and retro‑gaming enthusiasts who need accurate emulation for testing, debugging, or playing classic games. An embedded MCP server offers debugging and tooling capabilities, and the codebase is open source under an MIT‑compatible license, with contributions and sponsorships welcomed through its GitHub repository.

Distribution is provided via native installers and package managers, including Homebrew for macOS, Ubuntu PPA and Fedora RPM for Linux, and downloadable archives for Windows and macOS on both x64 and ARM64 architectures. The emulator requires standard system libraries such as SDL3 on Linux and may need the Visual C++ Redistributable and OpenGL Compatibility Pack on Windows.
