Joplin

Note taking application with markdown editor and encryption support for mobile and desktop platforms. Runs client-side and syncs through a self hosted Nextcloud instance or similar (alternative to Evernote).

Joplin is a free, open‑source application for creating and organizing notes and to‑do items. It stores content in Markdown, supports tags, notebooks, and full‑text search, and can import Evernote exports as plain Markdown files. The program runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and also provides a terminal version, allowing users to work offline with all data kept locally.

Synchronization is handled client‑side and can use self‑hosted services such as Nextcloud or other cloud providers, with optional end‑to‑end encryption to keep notes private. A web‑clipper extension for Chrome and Firefox lets users capture web pages and screenshots directly into the app. Plugins, themes and a custom extension API enable further personalization.

The software is released under the MIT license, requires no subscription, and is positioned as a self‑hostable alternative to proprietary note‑taking services. Its focus on open formats ensures that users retain full control over their data.
