McBopomofo
Input method for Bopomofo (Phonetic Symbols of Mandarin Chinese)
McBopomofo is a macOS‑focused input method that lets users type Mandarin Chinese using Bopomofo phonetic symbols. It supports multiple keyboard layouts, including standard, Yi‑tian, Xu‑shi, Yi‑tian 26‑key, IBM, and Hanyu Pinyin configurations, and relies on the Gramambular2 engine for word segmentation and selection based on an n‑gram maximum‑likelihood model. The software includes a built‑in dictionary that can be edited by the user, and a simple symbol table accessed via the back‑tick key.
The application is lightweight and designed specifically for macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, with installation performed by extracting a zip archive and running the installer, which overwrites any previous version. It is released under the MIT License, allowing free use and redistribution while preserving the copyright notice.
In addition to the macOS version, source code is available for Linux and Chrome OS, and the project maintains a public repository where users can report dictionary issues or contribute improvements. The latest stable release is 3.0, dated March 8 2026.
