A terminal‑based client lets users search, stream, and download audio or video from YouTube without needing an API key. Searches are entered with a leading slash, and results can be played directly, saved to local playlists, or imported from YouTube playlists. The tool also supports album‑track matching, comment browsing, and configurable display of result fields.

Playback is handled by external players such as mplayer, mpv, or VLC, and downloaded media can be converted to MP3 or other formats when ffmpeg or avconv is available. The program runs on Python 3 and is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS.

The project is a fork of the original mps‑youtube, retaining its command‑line interface and adding features like VLC audio playback without a GUI. Installation is possible via pip or pipx, and updates can be performed with the same tools.
