Perian

(**No longer under active development**) ~~Let QuickTime play all the common formats of free plug-ins~~.

Visit

Perian is an open‑source QuickTime component that adds support for a wide range of media formats, such as AVI, DivX and XviD, as well as subtitle handling. By installing the component, QuickTime on macOS 10.4.7 or later can decode and play these formats without needing separate players. The project’s source code is released under LGPL v2.1 or later, and it has been distributed with a minimal preference UI and easy update mechanism.

The software was maintained by a community team from 2006 until its retirement in 2012, after which no further development or official support is provided. Users are encouraged to continue using the final release, seek assistance through the project’s mailing list or IRC channel, and consider for the code on platforms such as GitHub.

Perian is aimed at macOS users who want to extend QuickTime’s native capabilities to handle common video and audio containers, especially those who prefer a single component rather than multiple third‑party players. Its distinctiveness lies in being a “Swiss‑army‑knife” QuickTime plugin that integrates many format decoders into the native media framework.
