Powder Toy
Physics sandbox game
The software is a free physics sandbox that models air pressure, velocity, heat, gravity and many interactions between substances. Users can place solids, liquids, gases, and electronic components to build machines, structures, terrain, or elaborate contraptions, then observe how they behave, explode, or operate. A built‑in Lua API lets players automate actions or create plugins, and the game supports loading and sharing community‑created saves.
It targets hobbyists, educators, and anyone interested in experimenting with virtual physics, circuit design, or creative construction. The sandbox nature encourages building simple devices or complex systems such as CPUs, power plants, or explosive devices, all within a 2‑D environment that visualizes the underlying simulations.
The project is open source under the GNU GPL, with source code available for modification and contribution. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, and Android, and provides a script manager for saving progress and applying community scripts. Regular updates address bugs and restore element definitions, while an online gallery lets users browse and upload creations.
