QuickLook Video

The application extends macOS Finder, QuickLook, and Spotlight to generate thumbnails, static previews, cover art, and detailed metadata for a broad array of audio and video file types. It adds support for formats that the native system does not handle, including Matroska, WebM, Windows Media, Ogg, AVI, QuickTime, Flash Video, Real Media, SMPTE, and MXF containers, as well as many audio codecs such as Vorbis and Windows Media Audio, and video codecs like VP6‑9, AV1, HEVC/H.265, VVC/H.266, Dolby Vision, Theora, DivX, and others.

The extension works by installing a Spotlight plugin that indexes non‑native formats and two media extensions that enable AVFoundation to decode the additional codecs. This mirrors the functionality of the former Perian plug‑in, but operates with the modern AVFoundation framework. Users install the package and follow the provided “Getting Started” guide to activate the functionality.

The software is macOS‑only, released under GPL 2.0 or later, and is considered stable. It is intended for users who need reliable visual and metadata representation of diverse media files directly within the Finder and QuickLook interfaces.
