VASSAL
Board game engine
Vassal is an open‑source engine that lets users create and play digital versions of board and card games. It provides a framework for adapting physical games into online modules, supporting a wide range of genres such as wargames and Eurogames. The platform includes a library of more than 3,200 ready‑made modules, allowing players to launch games without building them from scratch.
The software enables both synchronous and asynchronous play. Users can connect to a central server to compete against live opponents, or they can take turns at their own pace using email or Discord integration. This flexibility accommodates different schedules and preferences for remote tabletop gaming.
Designed for gamers, designers, and scholars, Vassal serves as a tool for prototyping, studying, and enjoying board games when physical space or in‑person gathering is limited. It runs on macOS and is considered stable for regular use.
