Vassal is an open‑source engine that lets users create and play digital versions of board and card games. It provides a framework for adapting physical games into online modules, supporting a wide range of genres such as wargames and Eurogames. The platform includes a library of more than 3,200 ready‑made modules, allowing players to launch games without building them from scratch.

The software enables both synchronous and asynchronous play. Users can connect to a central server to compete against live opponents, or they can take turns at their own pace using email or Discord integration.
