Doomsday Engine
Enhanced source port of Doom, Heretic, and Hexen
Doomsday Engine is a source‑port that runs the classic first‑person shooters Doom, Heretic and Hexen while updating their visual and audio subsystems. It retains the original gameplay mechanics but adds modern rendering features such as particle effects, dynamic lighting, bloom, vignette, geometry‑based ambient occlusion, upscaled textures, sky‑boxes and support for 3D models in FBX or MD5 formats. Audio is enhanced with 3D sound, reverb via an FMOD plugin, MP3 music add‑ons and high‑quality MIDI synthesis on Unix.
The engine includes a graphical user interface for selecting game profiles and add‑ons, an in‑game overlay that provides configuration options and a console prompt, and a multiplayer server browser with automatic LAN discovery and a public master server. It also offers stereoscopic rendering modes and a background server tool for hosting games.
Developed with portable code based on Qt 5 and OpenGL, Doomsday Engine runs on macOS and is released under the GPL for applications and LGPL for core libraries. The project is stable, open‑source, and provides documentation, scripting support, and a community forum for users and developers.
