GarageHQ
Geo-distributed, S3‑compatible storage service that can fulfill many needs.
Garage provides a self‑hosted, S3‑compatible object storage service that can be deployed across multiple geographic zones. It stores each data chunk in three separate zones, offering redundancy against network latency, disk failures, and operator errors. The system runs from a single, dependency‑free binary on any Linux distribution, requiring modest hardware: any x86_64 or ARM CPU from the past decade, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB disk, and a network link of at least 200 ms latency and 50 Mbps bandwidth.
The design targets administrators who need reliable storage without a dedicated backbone, allowing clusters to be built from heterogeneous, even second‑hand machines. By implementing the Amazon S3 API, Garage works with existing S3‑aware applications and tools, while its lightweight footprint makes deployment fast and operation simple.
Garage is released under AGPL‑3.0, is free to use with a built‑in free tier, and does not require a subscription. It is a stable, open‑source project that incorporates concepts from Dynamo, CRDTs, and Maglev to achieve high resiliency and ease of management.
