Hermit Crab
Run shell commands without leaving your current app
Hermit Crab lets macOS users invoke a shell command from any foreground application using a configurable keyboard shortcut. After the shortcut summons the interface, the user types the desired command, which executes immediately without opening a separate terminal window. The tool then presents the command’s output, offering a one‑click option to copy the results to the clipboard.
In addition to running ad‑hoc commands, Hermit Crab maintains a history of previously entered commands, allowing users to re‑execute them quickly. If a full terminal session is needed, the app provides a shortcut to launch Terminal with the same command context, then retreats out of the way when the user is finished.
The application is distributed as a macOS‑only cask via Homebrew or as a direct download, and it runs without requiring notarization. It targets developers and power users who need occasional command‑line access while staying focused on their primary workflow.
