openHAB

Vendor and technology agnostic open source software for home automation.

openHAB provides a framework for building home‑automation solutions that are independent of any particular vendor or technology. The core runtime consists of OSGi bundles that can be assembled into a custom distribution, and it is used by the main openHAB distribution to expose a large catalogue of supported devices and protocols. The project is released under the EPL‑2.0 license, is self‑hostable, and does not require a subscription or cloud service, allowing users to keep all data on their own hardware.

The system is written in Java and runs on the Apache Karaf OSGi runtime, making it portable across Linux, macOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, Docker, Synology and other platforms. It offers a rule engine with time‑ and event‑based triggers, scripting, actions, notifications and voice‑control integration, and it can be accessed through web, iOS and Android applications. Over 400 technologies and thousands of devices are supported via a pluggable add‑on architecture.

Developers can build and extend the core using Maven, and the project provides detailed contribution guidelines and a vibrant community that maintains documentation, examples and support channels. The openHAB Cloud connector enables optional integration with popular cloud platforms such as Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit while preserving local control.
