WebThings Gateway

WebThings is an open source implementation of the Web of Things, including the WebThings Gateway and the WebThings Framework.

A self‑hosted web application that lets users monitor and control building‑wide devices through a single web interface. It implements the W3C Web of Things standards, providing a unified dashboard where connected sensors and actuators can be viewed, managed, and configured from any browser. The platform includes a visual rules engine for “if‑this‑then‑that” automations, an interactive floorplan for spatial device placement, and long‑term logging of sensor data to reveal trends and anomalies.

The gateway is extensible via adapter add‑ons that add support for additional hardware and communication protocols, allowing integration of a wide range of smart‑home and IoT devices. Installation is primarily offered through a Docker image, with experimental snap packages and source‑build options for various operating systems, including Linux, macOS, and Raspberry Pi.

Targeted at hobbyists, developers, and privacy‑conscious users who want a locally controlled smart‑home hub, the software is released under the MPL‑2.0 license, is free of subscription fees, and is maintained as a stable, open‑source project.
