Vorta provides a graphical desktop client that integrates the BorgBackup engine with macOS and Linux environments. It lets users create encrypted, deduplicated and compressed backups, schedule them through flexible profiles, and store the archives on local disks, personal servers, or compatible hosting services such as BorgBase. The interface presents a unified view of point‑in‑time archives and supports restoring individual files.

The tool targets users who need reliable, offline‑first protection against data loss, ransomware or theft without vendor lock‑in. It is built on PyQt and Qt, runs on any platform supporting those libraries, and is distributed under GPLv3, allowing free use, modification and audit. Installation packages are available through common channels like Flathub, Homebrew and PyPI.

Development follows a Python‑centric workflow using uv for dependency management, and the project welcomes contributions ranging from code to translation. Documentation and community discussion are hosted on the project’s website and GitHub.
