Friendica provides a self‑hosted social communication platform that interoperates with a wide range of decentralized services. By supporting ActivityPub, OStatus, diaspora*, IMAP/ESMTP, RSS/Atom and various plugins, it lets users post, comment, like, share photos, create events and manage profiles while communicating with contacts on Mastodon, Lemmy, Diaspora, Misskey, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Pleroma and many other networks. The system includes access‑list controls, private groups, one‑to‑one messaging and optional content expiration, and it allows users to download their personal data.

The software targets individuals, communities and organizations that want to run their own social node without relying on centralized providers. It is built with PHP and MySQL, making installation comparable to typical WordPress hosting, and it can be extended through third‑party plugins and themes. The AGPL‑3.0 licence guarantees that the code remains free and modifiable.
