OpenIn

OpenIn is a macOS utility that lets users route URLs, mailto links, telephone links, and files to the application of their choice. It can be set as the system default handler, configured with rules that automatically select an app, or configured to display a picker when multiple targets are available. The tool supports custom routing based on domain, path, modifier keys, or the originating application, and can separate work and personal rules on the same machine.

The software includes browser extensions for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox that forward links to OpenIn only when invoked via context menu, toolbar button, or configurable settings such as forwarding every link, only cross‑domain links, or only when a modifier key is pressed. An OpenIn Helper component is required for versions installed from the Mac App Store.

Typical use cases include opening different browsers or mail clients for distinct workflows, launching links in specific browser profiles or private windows, directing Zoom invitations to the Zoom app, and routing media links to native apps like Apple TV or Apple Music. The utility also allows selection of applications based on the active macOS Focus.
